چکیده

In human-human interaction, the participants’ multimodal behaviour has impact on the interaction as a whole, and similarly in spoken human-robot interactive situations, the interlocutors’ multimodal signals seem to correlate with the user’s assessment of the interaction. We explored in more detail how some aspects of multimodal behaviour (gazing, facial expressions, body posture) can predict the user’s experience and impressions of the robot’s behaviour (responsiveness, expressiveness, interface, usability, overall impression). The results indicate that the user’s assessment concerning the evaluation categories Interface and Usability, and to some extent the categories Expressiveness and Overall correlate with their behaviour in a statistically significant manner. The work contributes to our understanding of how the interlocutors’ engagement and active participation relate to their assessment of the success of communication, and points towards automating evaluation of human-robot interactions.

Relative importance of spatial and temporal precision for user satisfaction in human-robot object handover interactions

In current society there is a growing call for robotic platforms designed to provide direct assistance to humans within the near future. An essential requirement, if robots are to become accepted as service providers that interact directly with humans, is that the human-robot interactions must not only be safe and reliable, but also produce a satisfying user experience. Here we report results f...

Analysis of Engagement and User Experience with a Laughter Responsive Social Robot

We explore the effect of laughter perception and response in terms of engagement in human-robot interaction. We designed two distinct experiments in which the robot has two modes: laughter responsive and laughter non-responsive. In responsive mode, the robot detects laughter using a multimodal real-time laughter detection module and invokes laughter as a backchannel to users accordingly. In non...

Adaptive Coordination Strategies for Human-Robot Handovers

Handovers of objects are critical interactions that frequently arise in physical collaborations. In such interactions, humans naturally monitor the pace and workload of their partners and adapt their handovers accordingly. In this paper, we investigate how robots designed to engage in physical collaborations may achieve similar adaptivity in performing handovers. To that end, we collected and a...

User Experience in Human-Robot Interactions

This paper describes our experiments concerning human-robot interaction and its evaluation in order to measure the user’s communication experience with the robot. We assume that the user’s evaluation of the interaction reflects their participation in the interaction as a participant, and correlates with their own multimodal signaling as well as with their perception of the robot’s communicative...

Is Augmented Reality the Future Middleware for Improving Human Robot Interactions: A Case Study

With robots appearing frequently within our society, the cases will be higher where people with little or no practical experience in robotics would have to supervise robots. Future interfaces should make Human Robot Interactions (HRI) intuitive for such less-experienced users. A key requirement to have an intuitive interface is to improve the level of HRI performance. In this study we try to im...
